What Is the Green Bus?
The green bus is Islamabad’s electric bus service, and it’s easy to spot — small, quiet, and painted bright green. Unlike the big red metro buses on dedicated tracks, these run on regular roads and reach the neighbourhoods the main lines skip. They’re part of the city’s push towards cleaner, cheaper public transport.
Where the Green Bus Route Goes
The main green bus route runs between PIMS Hospital and Barakahu, covering roughly 15 kilometres. Key stops along the way include G-7/G-8, Aabpara, Serena Hotel, Lake View Park, and Malpur. It’s a lifeline for people living in Barakahu and the Margalla Town side who work or study in central Islamabad.
Because these are electric buses, the ride is noticeably smoother and quieter than a regular bus. They may be smaller than the red metro buses, but they arrive frequently and the seats are comfortable. For short daily commutes, many riders actually prefer them.
Timings, Fare and Frequency
Green buses run daily from around 6:00 in the morning till about 10:00 at night. The fare is very pocket-friendly — roughly Rs 50 for the full route, though it’s smart to confirm at the station as fares get revised from time to time. Buses arrive every few minutes during peak hours, so you rarely wait long.
Connecting With the Red Line
Here’s the clever part: the green bus route starts at PIMS, which is also a major Red Line interchange station. That means you can ride the green bus into the city centre and hop straight onto the red metro bus towards Faizabad, Blue Area, or Rawalpindi. One journey, two buses, zero hassle — and it still costs less than a rickshaw for the same distance.
A Quick Tip Before You Board
If you’re new to the green bus, download a transit app or check the route board at PIMS before your first trip. Timings stay fairly consistent, but evening frequency can dip on quieter days. Travel light, keep your fare ready, and enjoy one of the cheapest rides in the capital.
